Frequently Asked Questions
Do you only have Shetland ponies?
Yes. We specialise in Shetland ponies as we have years of experience in working with them and very young children.
What age can they start?
Children can successfully balance on a pony from age about two and a half to three years old. Our ponies can take children up to about age ten. Shetlands may be small but they are very strong..they used to work in the coal mines in the old days. Our standard (larger) Shetlands can take a weight of up to 7.5 stone. Starting at a young age can result in the development of a secure natural riding seat but perhaps more importantly early happy memories will sow the seed of a sense of adventure. We have all met people who used to ride but were put off by pressurised lessons and bad experiences. Our aim is to introduce ponies in a more relaxed and natural setting so that it is more fun for everyone.
Are you a riding school?
No. We are quite different from a traditional riding school in that we hope to recreate the experience of owning your own pony. Our experienced staff will introduce you to owning a pony and help you take your first all important steps with horses. Our ponies are lead rein ponies suitable for beginning on.
Can I ride off the lead rein?
No. Our ponies are all trained for lead rein work only. Our members will work towards riding off the lead rein when they are ready.
I am not “horsy” Does it matter?
No. Our club is designed to encourage everyone to get to know ponies better and enjoy being with them. We will help you every step of the way. It is really not that difficult and will open a whole new world of outdoor fun up for you and your child.
What is Natural Horsemanship?
You may have heard of Monty Roberts “the horse whisperer”. We use the principles of a similar man called Pat Parelli to help you understand and enjoy being with your pony and your pony to enjoy being with you! We strongly feel that this natural approach will lay the foundations for a lifetime of happiness with horses. Natural horsemanship works with the horse’s psychology to create a lasting partnership. We use Natural horsemanship pads as opposed to saddles to give a safer, comfortable and more natural seat and to develop a closer bond with the horse. Natural horsemanship encourages you to play with your horse and children love playing!
Isn’t riding dangerous?
Riding is a risk sport and ponies can bite and kick and be unpredictable.
We take every care to minimise the risks and show you how to be safe around ponies. We are covered by a public liability insurance and licensed by Elmbridge borough council. Our staff are trained in equine specific first aid and are cleared to work with children.
What equipment do I need?
We do supply hard hats which we have specially selected for size and comfort for small children. Body protectors are not required for riding Shetland ponies .Riding boots or stout shoes are recommended. We ride using Natural Horsemanship saddle pads that do not have stirrups there is no chance of dragging. You will need a waterproof jacket, leggings or jeans or jodhpurs if you wish. A pair of gloves are a good idea. For the leader you need some comfortable walking boots or wellies and outdoor clothes.
Can I leave the children with you?
No. This is a joint activity and children must be accompanied by parents all the time. Our aim is to make it an enjoyable experience for both of you and to encourage you to spend outdoor time together.
What if it’s raining?
We do go out in all but the very worst weather.
What if I miss a regular session?
Do telephone us. Missed regular sessions cannot be refunded, accrued or the value of the session offset. If it is a floating session we can rearrange with 24 hours notice if possible.
What if I give up?
Owning a pony is for life not just for Christmas. Our pony share memberships are annual. Ownership is more of a commitment than ordinary lessons at a riding school and this should be considered before joining. We aim to work long term to build up the bond between pony and owner and to establish responsibility in animal care as a lasting lesson for children. We do ask for a three month notice if you are unable to continue and the membership fee and annual maintenance are non refundable.
Is it fun for Boys?
YES! We encourage boys to ride and find they benefit greatly from the secret bond formed with their pony. Boys respond very well to our outdoor approach and really enjoy riding the ponies in the fields as opposed to pressurised lessons in a school. We like to encourage boys and show them that learning to ride could open up a whole world of fun for them too.
Can we bring Dogs?
We love dogs but Shetland ponies do not! Please leave your dogs at home or if they do come they must stay in the car with an open window. Sorry, but our insurance does not allow dogs to be with the ponies.
